Marvolo was an Orphan; he was left outside a monastery near Pinecrest just days after he was born. The monastery was home to many monks who took Marvolo in and taught him. While there he was an able student and in particular he loved books and read everything he could from the monastery’s extensive library. When he came of age, he stayed on at the monastery as a librarian. As he studied more books, he found some dedicated to magic. Through practice, and perseverance, he managed to learn a few simple cantrips. It was at this time that he started to develop a fascination with spells involving fire, flames and heat: the art of pyromancy.

Over many years Marvolo began to show some skill as a wizard, although no-one thought more of his abilities than Marvolo himself. He started to call himself Marvolo the Great, hoping others would catch on. Sadly, it never really did, but to this day Marvolo has not given up hope.

Time passes fairly uneventfully in the library, until “the incident”. It involved a fire, but no more is known. Even Marvolo himself cannot remember what happened, except that he must never go back to Pinecrest or the monastery.

Marvolo was forced out into the wider world, for the first time in his life. He made it as far as Eastholm, leaving behind him a trail of burned and wilted flowers. The trail would not have been hard to pick up and in private moments, Marvolo wonders if he might have been followed.

With little money and no-where left to go, Marvolo fairly quickly got himself into trouble as he tried to stand up to some thugs at the local tavern. He talked a reasonable fight, but as soon as blades were drawn he panicked. Thankfully, before he is overwhelmed, Rhogar intervened and the two of them manage to subdue the would be muggers. Impressed by his own abilities, Marvolo decided to join with Rhogar in order to pursue a career as an adventurer.
